James Douglas “Jim” Larson, 64 years of age, of rural Funk, died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, July 10, 2021. Jim was born at the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege, Nebraska, on May 25, 1957, the youngest of four children, born to Earl W. and Charlotte (Sunblade) Larson. He received his education from the Axtell Public schools, where he graduated with the class of 1975. Jim was an avid sports lover and participated in football, baseball, basketball, golf, and pole vault in track. He pursued higher education from Kearney State College and played football and then attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Jim returned to Phelps County and began farming and raising cattle with his father and later farming on his own.
On May 19, 1984, Jim was united in marriage to Wendy Wells at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege. The couple made their home near Funk, where they enjoyed working side by side, with the daily farm operation. The couple were blessed with three children: Dustin, Jamie, and Jordan.
Jim enjoyed watching the kids in all of their activities and coaching. He took great joy in visiting Kansas City to see his grandkids and always took advantage of an opportunity to attend a Chiefs or Royals game; and also enjoyed attending Husker Football games. Jim was truly the happiest when all the kids were home, cooking meals and playing cards together as a family.
With his “take-charge attitude,” Jim was always helping others and looking out for everyone else. He was a “Jack-of-all-trades” and a “Mr. Fix It;” there wasn’t a project he wasn’t afraid to tackle. This was very evident when he tore down his own crib at a young age. Jim loved his kids and grandkids, the Lord, all sports, and when unable to watch, he listened to games in the tractor or combine.
Jim was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell, where he served on the church council and was also a member of the Corn Growers Association. Jim was a talented athlete in all sports, but it was his love for baseball, that led a close group of friends to start the renovations at the Axtell baseball fields. Jim also volunteered at the local track meets and helped coach pole vaulting.
Jim was preceded in death by: brother, David in 1970; his parents: Earl and Charlotte Larson; his father-in-law, Ted R. Wells; and brother-in-law: Michael Wells.
Jim is survived by his wife, Wendy Larson of rural Funk; his children: Dustin Larson of Holdrege; Jamie Hruska and her husband, Eric; and Jordan Larson, both of Axtell; two grandchildren: Emma and Mason Hruska; brother, Jerry Larson and his wife, Linda of Axtell; sister, Kathryn Illingworth and her husband, Stephen of Hastings, Nebraska; mother-in-law, Arlis Wells of Holdrege; two brothers-in-law: Jim Wells and his wife, Ellen of Omaha, Nebraska; and Jerry Wells of Axtell; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members, and many friends.
Visitation was held on Thursday, July 15, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell and the Axtell Ball Association.
