The Kearney County Fairgrounds livestock area is often underappreciated until the County Fair rolls around. One local 4H club has been working to improve the area in the off season. The latest update was the creation and installation of three new gates on the west side where goats and sheep are penned.
After installing an updated hog water system at the fairgrounds last summer and making improvements to the sheep area, the group still had money left that had been gifted to the club by Cargill of Heartwell. They decided to continue their improvement of the Kearney County Fairgrounds with the remaining funds.
Club president and project leader Zach Reichstein made the gates during his metals class at Minden High School. The creation doubled as a project for school and Industrial Arts instructor Bob Carlson helped guide him through the process. Reichstein used a gate from the fairgrounds as a template to create his design. Carlson ordered the materials from Minden Machine Shop and Reichstein began piecing the project together.
