Lady Cats Fall To Giltner At D2-7

The Axtell Lady Cats had their 2011 season come to an end in the finals of the Class D2-7 subdistrict held on November 1 in Hastings at St. Cecilia’s Chapman Gymnasium.
The second-seeded Lady Cats faced the top-seeded Giltner Hornets with the winner advancing to the D2-4 district final on Nov. 3.
Giltner was able to defeat the senior laden Cats in three sets by scores of 12-25, 23-25 and 16-25. Axtell was aiming for its second consecutive trip to state after the Lady Cats were in the D-1 field in 2010.
Axtell ends the season with a record of 20 wins and 8 losses.
Axtell was led by Hailey Kring with a team-high eight kills on 26/28 attacks. Lexi Klauz-Rohde added six kills in the match followed by Sara Fecht and Kaylee Becker with three kills each while Sierra Robinson picked up one kill.
Hailey Kring was the leading server against Giltner going 9/9 with a pair of aces. Fecht was 7/8 serving with an ace. Gabby Knoble was also 9/9 from the service line.
Knoble was 53/54 setting with 12 assists while Fecht added seven.
Hailey Kring had a team-best 16 digs while Knoble had seven and Gabbie Nickel and Becker had three each.
Becker and Klauz-Rohde also recorded one ace block each in the loss.
Axtell opened the D2-7 subdistrict on Oct. 31 as the second-seeded Lady Cats defeated the third-seeded Heartland Lutheran Red Hornets in straight sets.
