Lady Cats Move On To Title Game

The Axtell Lady Cats girls basketball team picked up a home court victory in the first round of the 2011 Axtell Holiday Tournament on Thursday in Axtell.
The Lady Cats picked up a 48-36 victory over Spalding/Spalding Academy Knights to move into the championship game on Friday, Dec. 30 to face the Blue Hill Bobcats who defeated Eustis-Farnam.
Axtell is now 3-4 on the season behind a 20 point performance from Hailey Kring. Kring led the Cats followed by Sara Fecht with eight and Kaylee Becker seven.
Axtell led the Knights in a low scoring first period with both teams combining for eight points. Axtell held a 5-3 edge going into the second period.
In the second, Axtell reached double figures for the first time netting 11 points. Spalding/Spalding Academy ended the second quarter with nine. The Lady Cats went into intermission holding the 16-12 lead.
In the third period, S/S-A outscored Axtell for the first time in the contest and scored a game-high 14 points. Axtell kept pace with 12 points and maintained its lead going into the final eight minutes of action.
In the fourth, Axtell would double up the Knights outscoring them 20-10. Axtell went on for the 48-36 victory.
