Lady Whippets Get Wildcard, Minden Is In 2011 State Tournament
The Minden Lady Whippets basketball had to wait until Friday to be informed if they were going to earn the second wildcard for the 2011 Nebraska State Girls Basketball tournament.
The Whippets were able to get the final spot in the Class C-1 field after Wahoo was able to defeat Concordia in the district final. Minden punched its ticket into state for the first time since 2009.
Minden (20-2) will enter the tournament as the fifth-seed and take on the fourth-seeded Gordon-Rushville Mustangs (19-4) on Thursday, March 3 with tip time set for 3:45 p.m. at Pershing Center.
The Lady Whippets will be making their seventh state tournament field in school history and on its last trip to state Minden was defeated by Bishop Neumann in the first round.
The Minden/Gordon-Rushville winner advance to the C-1 semifinals on Friday, March 4 to meet either top-seeded Wahoo Warriors (25-1) or the eighth-seeded Norfolk Catholic Knights (14-9) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Tip time is 2 p.m.
The C-1 championship game will be held on Saturday, March 5 at 8:30 p.m. and the C-1 consolation game will be at 10 a.m. at Lincoln Southwest High School.
The other side of the C-1 bracket will have the second-seeded Sandy Creek Cougars (21-1) taking on the seventh-seeded Centura Centurions (18-5) in the opening round while the third-seeded Hastings St. Cecilia Hawkettes (19-4) face the sixth-seeded Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays (16-6).
