Lady Whippets Season Comes to End

Minden’s girls needed overtime to survive (two meanings to survive—lived to play another day and persevered through a physical game)— and ad- vance in the C1-9 subdistrict at Adams Central on February 14. The Whippets vanquished GICC 59-56 and moved the record to 19-4.

The game’s lead see-sawed back and forth with the Whippets needing to come back from four down entering the fourth quarter. After Minden forged a tie in the final minute, GICC hit a free throw to go up one. Then with less than a second to go, Sloane Beck grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on her shot attempt. She made the first free throw but….not so fast. The game officials made an error that disallowed the FT so she had to make that first FT a second time. She did and when the second at- tempt missed, the game went to overtime. Minden seized the lead immediately in OT as Trinity Houchin sank a three. A few seconds later the lead grew to five.

In the last minute the Crusaders’ Lucy Ghaifan nailed a three-pointer to bring GICC to within one. Rozie Nelson followed with two FTs (Minden was 8-8 from the line in the extra minutes) putting the Whippets up three. GICC’s three-point attempt in the final seconds for a tie was off the mark. The Whippets were 15 of 40 (37%) on FGs and 23 of 34 (67%) on FTs. They had 10 defensive and seven of- fensive rebounds, six assists, 10 steals and eight turnovers.
