Late Touchdown From Speer, Carries Minden To 25-21 Win

All the Minden Whippets needed was one play with just over a minute remaining to pull the come-from-behind victory out on Thursday against the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders.
Minden was down 21-18 with 1:20 to play as the Crusaders scored the go-ahead touchdown and two-point conversion.
The Whippets took possession at the 34-yard line after a kick off return by Ryan Chramosta. Quarterback Derek Kissinger went to the air and hooked up with Jarod Speer across the middle and the junior speedster did the rest, breaking a tackle and then off to the end zone, a play covering 66-yards.
Kissinger made the point-after kick and the Whippets prevailed over GICC 25-21 in a battle for the district championship.
Minden finishes its regular season with a record of 6-2 and heads into the Class C-1 state playoffs as a three-seed and will host the 14-seed St. Paul at Kuper Field on Thursday, Oct. 28 with kick set for 7 p.m.
“I’m extremely proud of our team and the Minden football program and its accomplishments during the regular season,” stated Minden head coach Sam Dunn. “Our seniors set the goals to win more than five games, to win the district championship, and to host a playoff game and we all accomplished these three goals.  We have had tremendous leadership and determination all season and I was pleased with our effort against GICC. Jarod Speer had a tremendous night for us with two touchdowns, the last one was one of the biggest moments of the season. Derek Kissinger did a nice job of getting the ball to Speer and our line competed and gave Derek time to throw. Defensively we came up big all night- limiting GICC to under 168 yards.”
The game started well for the Whippets on their first possession as Minden was marching the ball right down the field on the GICC defense. But on the 11th play of the drive, Kissinger was intercepted to halt the drive.
