Memorial Day Activities
Minden
Monday, May 27
5:30 a.m. – The Legion and VFW will be putting out large and small flags at the Minden Cemetery. The public is encouraged and invited to help put out the flags. Meet at the north end of the cemetery.
11:30 a.m. – at the Minden Cemetery. The WWII veterans not needing special assistance are to meet at the north end of the cemetery at 11:15 a.m.
The service will feature speakers Lieutenant Colonels Brad and Dawn Hilton. Lt. Col. Dawn Hilton is the daughter of Kathleen Miller and the late Ted Miller of Minden. She was the First Commander at the Joint Regional Correctional Facility at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. She and her husband are soon to be stationed at the Army War College in Washington DC. Their presentation will be about “Service to the Nation”.
12:30 p.m. – At the conclusion of the Minden Cemetery service, the public is invited to a barbecue at the Red River Steakhouse and Lounge. The drawing for raffle ticket prizes will be at the barbecue. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the barbecue.
4:00 p.m. – Flag pick-up and re-packing for storage will be at the cemetery. The public is invited to help.
Osco
Sunday, May 26
4:00 p.m. – Memorial Day Service at the Osco Cemetery will be held on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Campbell Legion will participate in the ceremony. The speaker will be Pastor Don Hunzeker from Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden and Alex Raun, a 2013 Minden High School graduate, will sing the anthem.
Following the service, a luncheon will be served including homemade pie at the Osco School.
Wilcox
Sunday, May 27
11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. -Wilcox Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a Memorial Day Lunch at the Wilcox Lion’s Hall.
2:30 p.m. – Memorial Day Services will be held at Freewater Cemetery.
Heartwell
Monday, May 27
8:00 a.m. – VFW Post 5537 will conduct a service at Eaton Cemetery service near Heartwell.
8:30 a.m. – Following the Eaton Cemetery, the VFW will conduct a service at Holy Family Cemetery near Heartwell.
9:00 a.m. – the VFW will then conduct a service at Liberty Cemetery.
Fredericksburg
Monday, May 27
10:00 a.m. – American Legion Post 94 and VFW Post 5537 will join together for a service at the Fredericksburg Lutheran Church, 1 mile east and 5 miles south of Minden. Pastors Baron and Nancy Cole will be the speakers at the service.
11:30 a.m. – Lunch by the Fredericksburg Women of the ELCA featuring Rolepolse sandwiches, salads and pie.
2:00 p.m. – Benefit auction of handmade items. Proceeds support mission projects.
Ft. Kearny
Sat. – Mon., May 25-27
Want to walk into the past? Come out to Ft. Kearny State Historical Park for Memorial Weekend. There will be living history re-enacted 1860’s soldiers camp, wood carving, knife making, and pine needle basket displays along with other demonstrations.
Saturday and Sunday events from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Monday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
A cannon firing will be at 2 p.m. each day.
Contact the park office for more information. A park entry permit is required and can be purchased at the visitor’s center.
Hildreth
Monday, May 27
9:00 a.m. – Coffee and rolls provided by the auxiliary at the Hildreth Middle School.
10:30 a.m. – Service will be held at Hildreth Middle School Gymnasium. Featured speaker is Pastor Steve Byrne from Trinity Lutheran in Hildreth,
Axtell
Sunday, May 27
11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. – Axtell Fire and Rescue fund raiser at the North Park by the pool. Sloppy joes, baked beans, chips and beverage. Free will donation. Bring your own lawn chairs. Swimming pool will be open weather permitting. If it rains, event will move to the Fire Hall.
1:00 p.m. – Donate Life 5K fun run/walk, with sign ups at 12:30 p.m. at the Axtell Pool Park. Do you know someone with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, lung disease, cancer or eye disease? They are at risk of needing organ or tissue donation! The race, sponsored by Axtell Cheer and the Sarah Nelson Family, will start at 1 p.m. and there is an entry fee.
Monday, May 28
10:30 a.m. -the VFW and VFW Auxiliary Cemetery Services will be held and will include the Chamber Citizen of the Year Award. The Axtell school band directed by Beth Petersen will perform. The pastor will be Rev. Kathleen Splitt of Axtell Presbyterian Church.
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – There will be a Memorial Day Meal in the school’s practice gym, for a free will donation sponsored by the Presbyterian Women, Keene E-Free Church and Trinity Free.
2:00 p.m. – The annual Memorial Day Parade with the Axtell Fire and Rescue in charge. Line up will be just west of Kat’s Korner Market.
Following the parade, Keene Kids 4-H Club will serve pie and ice cream at the community building. The scouts will have a horseshoe tournament at the new horseshoe courts in the South Park. The pool will be open, weather permitting.
1:00 to 4:00 p.m.. – Mosaic at Bethphage Village will be selling popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy and crafts at the school under the overhang.
