Minden Public Schools kicked off its Nebraska Beef in Schools program March 27 with a district wide cookout. Grilling enough burgers to feed students and staff in three schools was a coordinated effort.
“We started cooking around 9:30-10:00 a.m. We were able to transport the hamburgers over to the elementary school first and then get them to the high school and middle school for their lunch times,” Superintendent James Widdifield said.
Assisting in the effort were school food service staff and volunteers from the Minden Beef Boosters. Andy Dorn, Hannah Gaebel, Dan Kristensen, Carson Blum, Larry Wilcox, and Colin and Mary Schwenka seasoned and grilled burgers while food service staff prepared the rest of the meal. Fun beef facts were also posted in the schools so students could learn more about the beef industry while they waited in the lunch line.
