Minden Board Accepts Two Resignations From Cavenee And Schwenka

The Minden Public School Board of Education held its May board meeting on May 13 in the C.L. Jones Media Center.
The board approved the retirement with regret of two long-time teachers in the district. Middle school teachers Mary Jo Schwenka and Deb Cavenee both turned in their letters of resignation. Cavenee has been with the district for 35 years teaching physical education /health while Schwenka has worked at MPS for 25.5 years.
The board did fill one of the two vacancies with the hiring of Nicole Schnitzler as the sixth and seventh grade math teacher.
The two biggest discussion items for the board were to consider bus purchase and approval of DLR contract.
The busses were first. MPS has budgeted for two more busses in this year’s budget to get its bus fleet where it needs to be after adding two buses last year. The decision for the board was to choose between a 53-passenger bus and a 65-passenger bus with not much price difference. The choice came down to activities and running the route with the bigger bus. The bigger size would be advantageous for activities but since that would also be on the route and not be half full the 53-passenger would seem to serve the needs of the district.
