Minden Boys Win, Advance To Play Ainsworth In District Final

The Minden Whippets boys basketball team knew they had to get a victory over the Kearney Catholic Stars in the final of the Class C1-9 subdistrict if they wanted to keep their dreams alive for a berth in the boys state tournament March 10-12.
The Class C-1 third-rated Whippets met up with the C-1 eighth-rated Stars at Grand Island Northwest on Thursday with an appearance in the district final hanging in the balance.
The subdistrict top-seeded Minden made key play after key play late in the game to edge the second-seeded Stars 51-42 and live to play another day.
Minden (20-2) advances to the C1-5 district final on Monday, Feb. 28 where they will meet the Ainsworth Bulldogs (19-6) for the third time this season at Broken Bow High School with tip set for 7 p.m.
This wasn’t the prettiest game Minden or Kearney Catholic played during the season, but the Whippets were able to overcome the wild and frantic pace the game was played at.
Minden got off to an early 5-2 lead behind a tip in basket from Miles Steen and a three-pointer from Derek Kissinger.
