The Minden Cross Country Invitational ushered in the season for the Whippets’ runners on September 3 at the Minden Country Club. The high schoolers competed at 5,000 meters (5K) while the junior high athletes ran 3,000 meters (3K). Three schools vied in the 5K while four schools had participants in the 3K.
Aurora swept the team titles for both of the high school boys’ and girls’ races. On the boys’ side Aurora scored 17, Minden 20 and Gothenburg 56. For the girls, Aurora had a perfect 10 and Gothenburg edged Minden 40 to 41 for second.
Grant Moody of Aurora was the boys’ individual champ clocking 16:33. Aidan Wheelock was a not-so-distant second at 16:39. Other top-15 medalists for the Whippets were: Rodrigo Jauregui, fifth, 18:15; Colton Taylor, sixth, 18:17; Alex Olson, seventh, 18:18; Jay Maska, eighth, 18:20; Lucas Lahr, tenth, 18:30; Brandon Saunders, 11th, 18:40 and Jack Loucks, 15th, 19:21. Also competing for Minden were: Gonzalo Ornelas, 19th, 20:02; Chase Villars, 22nd, 20:34; Drew Hultquist, 36th, 22:58 and Cesar Gonzalez, 37th, 23:31. The race consisted of 45 runners.
