Minden Defeats Gothenburg 35-6
The 2011 Minden Whippet football team continued its magical season on Nov. 8 after defeating the Gothenburg Swedes at Kuper Field 35-6.
The second-seed Minden improved its record to 11-0 on the season and earned a berth in the west division Class C-1 semifinals against the top-seeded Norfolk Catholic Knights (11-0) on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. in Norfolk.
The Whippets are one win away from competing in the C-1 state championship game which will be held on Nov. 22 at 10:15 in Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Playing in the east division of the C-1 semifinal on Nov. 15 will be the second-seed Platteview (10-1) taking on the eight-seed Wahoo (9-2) with this winner taking on the Minden/Norfolk Catholic winner.
“What a great season,” stated a very enthusiastic Sam Dunn following the Minden victory over Gothenburg. “I think our team is very excited to advance to the semifinals. Drawing Norfolk Catholic is something we knew would happen if we kept winning. I have told the team to be the best we will have to beat the best. Norfolk Catholic’s record string of 23 straight wins is impressive and they have a very rich tradition in football, they are well coached and very athletic and I would say size wise we will be smaller, but should compare to them speed wise.”
“Truly this has been a magical season,” added Dunn. “Our seniors set goals at the beginning of the season, they have lead, and been dedicated to get to where we are at this time. I’m very proud of our entire team. We take pride in having an excellent scout team- our younger players do a great job of helping out each week. The school, parents and community have helped make this season something for the entire team to remember.”
