The Minden Lady Whippets basketball team knew going into the 2013 Nebraska State Girls Basketball Tournament the draw they had would be a tough side of the bracket.
Minden was making its ninth overall appearance in the state field and was coming off its 2012 Class C-1 runner-up finish.
The Whippets were back for more in 2013. Minden (19-4) was the fourth-seeded team entering the tournament on Thursday, Feb. 28 and they would face the fifth-seeded Pierce Bluejays (20-4) in a quarterfinal Class C-1 matchup at the Pershing Center.
Ironically, both Minden and Pierce received both of the C-1 wildcard berths into state.
Minden came into the contest with four losses (Holdrege, Grand Island Northwest, Kearney Catholic, all state participants, and Gothenburg). Pierce had a similar record with its four losses coming to Crofton, twice, Guardian Angels and Norfolk Catholic, all state teams this season.
Minden and Pierce watched the first game of the night session at Pershing as the top-seeded Chadron Cardinals topped the eight-seed Lincoln Christian to advance. The Whippets/Bluejays winner would take on Chadron in the semifinals on Friday.
The night would not be Minden’s night. Pierce used its size, length and zone defense to keep Minden in check. The Jays 18-5 second quarter propelled them to a big lead they would never relinquish, downing the Lady Whippets, 59-36. Minden ends the season with a record of 19-5 and playing in their final contest were seniors Sydney Stadler and Alaina Boudreau for Coach Rick Chramosta.
