Minden Girls Fall To Stars In C1-9
The Class C1-9 subdistrict final on Thursday in Grand Island at Northwest High School between the top-seeded Minden Lady Whippets and second-seeded Kearney Catholic was an inevitable meeting as the two Class C-1 powers have been ranked in the top five for most of the season. People around the state were ready to see these two central Nebraska powers clash in the contest since the districts were announced at the beginning of the season.
Something had to give in the matchup as Minden and Kearney Catholic were both trying to move into position to qualify automatically for the 2013 state tournament or get one of the two wildcards.
Kearney Catholic, ranked second in C-1, used a big second quarter run, 23-5, and built a lead over Minden, ranked fourth in C-1, at intermission and never looked back cruising to a 72-48 victory.
The Stars (20-2) move within one win from the state field as they will meet Ainsworth in Friday with the winner moving onto state. Minden (19-4), meanwhile, will be waiting to see its fate as the Whippets will be hoping for one of the two wildcards in Class C-1 after the cards fall following Friday district finals and subsequent wildcard point calculations.
Minden was led in the loss by double figure performances from Sydney Stadler, Jamie Kissinger and Rebecca Stewart. Stadler and Kissinger each finished with a team-high 12 points followed by Stewart with 11.
