Minden Golfers Place Second At SWC Tournament

The Minden Whippets varsity golf team hit the road and traveled north to Valentine to compete in the 2011 Southwest Conference golf tournament at The Prairie Club golf course outside Valentine on Thursday.
The Whippets efforts were rewarded with a runner-up team finish in the seven-team SWC race. Broken Bow won the SWC title by 24 strokes over Minden. The Indians shot a team-best 363 with the Dawgs coming in second with a 387. Gothenburg was third with a 388 followed by Ogallala with a 396, Cozad 400, Valentine 406 and Ainsworth 465.
“I thought the guys did a good job and they persevered and never gave up,” said Minden coach Eric Christensen. “The course was playing tough, especially the greens. We were happy with second place and we are not content with the way we played. The kids know they left a lot of strokes on the course. I know the kids will give their best as they prepare for districts.”
Minden had fourth players in the top 20 individuals. Leading the way for Minden was bronze medalist Derek Kissinger. Kissinger, a junior, took third place overall with an 18-hole total of 90. He was consistent shooting identical 45s on the front and on the back.
