Minden Kids Learn About Wildlife At SOAR Camp

Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary hosted the 2011 Summer Orientation About Rivers (SOAR) program.
Close to 75 children, between second and fifth grade, from Minden and surrounding towns showed up for four days of classes and activities.
SOAR is a day camp for kids to learn about nature discovery on the land and in the water. On Tuesday, June 28, there were classes on dipnetting, frogs, mammals, and they enjoyed a presentation from Raptor Recovery Nebraska.
RRN brought owls to show the kids how to handle the delicate birds, and how to take care of injured birds.
The morning classes also gave the kids insight into the Platte River ecosystem. The river is too high for them to actually go in, but the SOAR educators used smaller channels and backwater sloughs for dipnetting and seine work.
