Good pitching by both teams and a rare triple play pulled off by Minden First Bank highlighted the winner’s bracket game between McCook National Bank and the First Bank Seniors in the area tournament at Cozad on July 21 which unfortunately for First Bank went McCook’s way 3-2 dropping First Bank’s record to 6-11 and relegating Minden to the losers bracket.
First Bank got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second. Singles by Ben Edgecombe and Zach Hinrichs led to runs by way of RBI-scoring singles from Cal Johnson and Marshall Chasek. First Bank’s 2-0 lead held up through the first six innings.
McCook had a major threat going in the top of the sixth, however, that was promptly snuffed by First Bank executing a triple play. There were bases loaded and no outs when a McCook batter hit a sharp liner back at pitcher Edgecombe (one out) who then threw to third baseman Brennan Runge to step on the bag retiring a runner who had left the base (two outs) and then Runge tagged out the runner coming from second (three outs).
