The Minden Whippet girls and boys track and field teams wrapped up their district meet on Thursday in Lexington competing in the Class B-5 district meet at Ray Ehlers Field on the campus of Lexington High School.
The always challenging and difficult B-5 district was no exception this year.
The Whippets were able to qualify six athletes for the Class B division of the 2011 Nebraska State Track and Field Championships to be held at Burke Stadium in Omaha on Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21.
The Whippet boys placed ninth in the 11-team district scoring 19 points. Aurora won the boys district title with 111 points followed by York with 88.33 and Adams Central was third with 80.
The Dawgs will be sending a total of five state participants to Omaha. Leading the way will be 2010 silver medalist in the pole vault, Craig Driver. Driver, a senior, won the B-5 district meet with 14’0″ in windy conditions and in a meet where they vaulted both ways because of the wind direction.
The Minden 4×800 relay team of Rory Bruning, Chris Shelton, Carter Yelken and Thomas Sinsel also qualified for state. The relay team placed second after Grand Island Northwest was disqualified, moving the Whippets up one spot and into the state meet in a time of 8:38.2.
