Minden Upset, Gets C-1 Wild Card

The Class C-1 fourth-ranked Minden Whippet volleyball team was stunned in the semifinals of the Class C1-8 subdistrict on Halloween at Grand Island Northwest’s Rosencrans Gymnasium.
The subdistrict seeded the Whippets second and standing in the way was the third-seeded St. Paul Wildcats. St. Paul and Minden came into the sub on two different paths. St. Paul had lost six of its past seven games while the Lady Whippets were riding an 11 game winning streak including a big win over the Class B Seward Bluejays.
This night belonged to the Wildcats as St. Paul was able to pull off a stunning upset over the Whippets in five sets. The loss leaves Minden with a record of 25-4.
St. Paul won the opening two sets by scores of 23-25, 16-25 before Minden rallied to win the next two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-21 to force a fifth and decisive set. The Cats were able to use six Minden service errors en route to an 18-16 win.
St. Paul advanced to the C1-8 final to take on the top-seeded Kearney Catholic Stars with a berth in the C1-4 district final on Nov. 4 on the line.
