The Minden gridders’ season opener proved to be a stout challenge as the visiting Ogallala Indians left with a 40-0 win over the Whippets on August 25 at Kuper Field.
The first period was mostly a stalemate until lightning struck twice for the Indians in a matter of seconds late in the quarter. On the seventh play of a drive that Ogallala began at their own 23, the Indians’ quarterback Halligan sprinted 24 yards for a TD. A successful two-point conversion pass put Ogallala up 8-0 at 1:53.
The ensuing short kickoff ended with an Indian pouncing on a free ball at the Minden 36. Then on the very next snap a 36-yard pass play from Murphy to Orr found the end zone. The two-point conversion failed but at 1:44 Ogallala had a 14-0 lead.
