Madisyn Ayres won a gold medal with her Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Star Project at the 2013 National Leadership Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee July 6 through 11. The Minden High School junior qualified for the national competition when she won gold at the state level with her Recycle and Redesign Project earlier this year.
Ayres’ STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) project re-purposed Minden High School’s old basketball jerseys and shorts into purses and drawstring bags that she designed and sewed herself. She created a marketing plan for the project that would expand the project to other schools.
At the National Leadership Conference, Ayres competed against other FCCLA members from across the country. To earn her gold medal she had to give a presentation about her project to a panel of judges. After the presentation judges asked her several questions about her marketing plan and the response she has had regarding the project. Her project and presentation was ranked based on the number of points she earned out of 100.
