Funeral Service for Monica F. Skaggs were held on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Darren Theesen officiating. Interment will follow at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege, Nebraska.

Monica Faye Skaggs, 84 years of age, of Holdrege, died after a brief but courageous battle with COVID-19, on April 20, 2021, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Monica was born on December 30, 1936, in Minden, Nebraska, the oldest of three children, born to Chester Christian and Myrtle Katheryn (Jensen) Valentine. Monica received her education from Holdrege High School, and graduated with the class of 1954.
On August 14, 1954, Monica was united in marriage to John Wesley (Wes) Skaggs in Holdrege, and to this union the couple were blessed with three children: John, Janet and JoAnne.
Following her marriage, Monica worked as a Medical Research Lab Technician at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple later moved back to Holdrege and Monica continued her work as a Lab Technician at the Brewster Hospital and Holdrege Medical Clinic for 45 years.
Monica had many interests including: reading, cards, sports, music, painting, writing, and spending days at Johnson Lake. She became a Christian in 1968 and throughout her life made Jesus and his teachings a priority, particularly, teaching children about Jesus’ love. Much of her life was spent volunteering at the First Baptist Church in Holdrege, where she was a member for 50 years. Monica was active in the church as a Sunday School Teacher and acting as Sunday School Superintendent for a combined 55 years. She also worked with many organizations including the Cub Scouts, 4-H, Campfire girls and the Teammates Mentoring Program.
She was, until the end, a prayer warrior who when her feet hit the floor in the morning the devil said, `oh no, she’s up`.
Monica was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Wes Skaggs; her special grandmother, Anna Jensen; and brother-in-law, Dan McCracken.
Monica is survived by: her children: John Skaggs and his wife, Lisa of Axtell, Nebraska; Jan Knuth and her husband, Steve of Holdrege; JoAnne Breinig and her husband, Loren of Johnson Lake, Nebraska; grandchildren: Shai Stroh and her husband, Andrew of Hutchinson, Kansas; Wesley Christensen of Holdrege; AJ Skaggs and his fiancé, Madisen Eckhoff of Kearney, Nebraska; Aaron Skaggs of Axtell, Nebraska; Addyson Skaggs of Axtell; Amy Castle and her husband, Christopher of Omaha, Nebraska; sisters: Kathy Veal and her husband, Gerald of Holdrege; Janean McCracken of Kearney; friend and sister-in-law, Shirley Skaggs of Hastings; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held on Monday, April 26, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Monica’s honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
