The Minden High School Drama and Music Department will be performing ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ April 28-29 at the Minden Opera House. The musical comedy written by Mary Rodgers with lyrics by Marshall Barer is an adaptation of the famous fairy tale ‘The Princess and the Pea’.
Prince Dauntless is looking to marry, but Queen Aggravian has decreed that only the princess that can pass her test may marry her son. She has also declared that no one else in the kingdom may marry until the prince does, upsetting everyone in the kingdom. After a dozen princesses have failed the tests, Sir Harry sets out to find a truly exceptional princess. He returns with Princess Winnifred the Woebegone from the swamps. Winnifred and Dauntless have warmed up to each other, but Winnifred still must pass her test. The queen does her best to set the princess up for failure, but Winnifred has unexpected help to pass the impossible test.
Directors Carla Jacobs and Whitney Maulsby chose the musical after hearing about the great results other high schools had performing the play. The script and music offer a reasonable level for the students to learn in a few short months around their busy schedules.
“We want to build up our spring production to the level it has been in the past,” Maulsby said. “We love to put on full-length musicals for our community and we want the students to have the opportunity to share in such an amazing experience.”
