During an annual visit with family in Costa Rica, Alvaro Sanabria-Diaz placed eighth in one of the country’s largest road races. The impact from this race changed his life.
“I’m in Costa Rica every summer and I have an uncle who’s also a runner. He thought it would be good for me to do that race. Then I had people ask me if I wanted to run for Costa Rica’s team,” Sanabria-Diaz said. Sanabria-Diaz was only 20 years old at the time. He would have liked to accept, but he had previous obligations.
“I had to decline because I was running for the University of Nebraska-Kearney; but since that moment, I knew that after I was done with college, I would talk to Costa Rica and accept their offer of running for the national team,” Sanabria-Diaz said.
