Paxton Holds Off Wildcats In D1-5 Final

The saying goes “All good things must come to an end”. That could be applied to the Axtell boys’ basketball season as Paxton defeated the Cats 53-45 on March 3 in the D1-5 District final at Gothenburg. Axtell closed shop at 18-7, with an FKC Tourney championship and a number of wins over rated or highly regarded teams, especially late in the season. Five seniors-—Tyler Danburg, Zach Hinrichs, Nic Pearson (missed this final game due to an illness), Collin Soderquist and Jake Wehrer-— ended their four years as Wildcats with a composite record of 40-56 (3-20, 6-17, 13-12, 18-7).They went from hoping to win games three years ago to expecting to win much of last year and all of this season. For the second year in a row the Cats’ season ended one win short of qualifying for state.

The first quarter was fast-paced with Paxton at one point leading 10-4 but Axtell responded with a 14-4 run to lead 18-14 at 2:20. In that run the Cats hit threes on four consecutive possessions—by Wehrer, Danburg, Hinrichs and Danburg again. At quarter’s end Axtell led 20-18 with Danburg scoring 12 and Hinrichs five.
