The Minden Whippets wrestling team was in post-season action on Friday and Saturday when they competed in the Class B-3 district wrestling meet held in York at York High School hoping to punch several tickets to the 2012 Nebraska High School Wrestling Championships Feb. 16-18 in Omaha at CenturyLink Center.
The Whippets were able to send two wrestlers to state from the strong B-3 district meet. Jack Raffety, a senior, will be making his third appearance at the meet earning a fourth and sixth place medal in 2010 and 2011 at 152 pounds. Raffety was crowned district champion in York with an undefeated 35-0 record after winning the 170 pound division.
Joining Raffety at the 2012 state meet will be freshman Austin Olson. Olson was able to punch his own ticket to the big dance after placing fourth in the district meet.
Raffety and Olson begin their quest toward a state medal on Thursday morning when Class B and C hit the mats in Omaha.
The following are the individual results for all the Whippet wrestlers in their respective weight divisions:
106: Olson opened his district meet with a pin loss to Schmidt of GINW in 1:53 to fall into the consolation bracket. Olson opened with a 4-3 victory over Harlow of York to reach a spot in the semifinals, one victory away from state. In the semifinals, Olson pinned Shanno of Boone Central in 45 seconds to ensure a spot in the state field and a medal. Olson then was defeated by Schmidt for the second time, losing by pin in 2:02 to take fourth place.
160: Jed Birnie lost his first match by fall to Dohmen of York in 3:29 in the opening round. Birnie came back and had a bye in the consolation bracket before losing a 7-0 decision to Wolverton of Seward to end his tournament. Birnie completed the year with a record of 8-13.
