Ronald L. Golay age 79, was born in Minden on June 30, 1940; after extended illness Ron flew into the heavens Jan. 21, 2020 in Mesa, Ariz., being escorted by North American P51 Mustang Merlin Engine music.
As a young boy Ron grew up around Minden farming, irrigating and working around his father, Don Golay’s Implement and car dealership. Many traded in used cars were tested for stability by this young man! Those days were merely setting the stage for later in life.
Ron joined the Navy at an early age and served a four year term on a heavy cruiser, the USS Des Moines CA 134. During his tour of duty in the Beirut Lebanon crisis he was awarded an armed forces Expeditionary medal.
After being discharged he helped with the family farming at Faulkton, S.D. Ron soon became very interested in airplanes; earned a private pilot license and went on to own several airplanes. Ron had flying buddies who owned and restored WWII warbirds; several were North American P51 Mustangs. It was often stated among Ron’s pilot buddies that Ron had more backseat time in a P51 Mustang than a lot of the pilots had in the front seat in those days.
Cars and trucks were also a passion and he earned his living as an auto dealer and car/truck broker in Hawaii and the Denver metro area until his retirement. Ron loved football as a loyal Denver Broncos fan and enjoyed conversations about football with family and friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Elaine Golay.
He is survived by his son, Troy Golay of Colorado; brother, Robert Golay; sister-in-law, Ardis Golay and nieces, Kim and Kelly. Ron was a jovial, kind, family loving guy. He just loved it when his nieces called him “Uncle Ronnie”.
A summertime family celebration of life and burial will be held at the family plot in the Rose Garden Cemetery at Spearfish, S.D.
