More than 14,000 athletes from 47 states flocked to Lincoln and Omaha for the 2015 State Games of America held from July 28 to August 2. This event took the place of the Cornhusker State Games and gave eligibility to all Nebraska residents. This opportunity gave Brynn Gustafson of Heartwell the chance she needed to medal in four archery events.
“Normally you have to win a previous event in order to get through. But because it was here this year, it was a unique opportunity. I thought to myself, do I let this pass me up and not do it because I’m too scared of it? Or suck it up a little bit and practice extra hard and get there? So that’s what I did, I sucked up a whole lot of fear and went on my way. It’s a unique opportunity. You know you’re getting in the door, and sometimes that’s all you need is to get your foot in the door,” Gustafson said.
Despite the unconventional entry into the games, Gustafson won gold in both the 750 round one and two day target events as well as 3D marked. She also received silver in the 3D unmarked event. The results weren’t what she expected.
