On a warm and windy Monday, October 12th day on the Lake Maloney Golf Course, the Minden Whippets girls golf team opened the 2015 State Golf Tournament. Lake Maloney is known for tight fairways, undulating greens that are fast and hard to hold. Winds whipping from 20 to 30 mph made course play even more difficult. Through it all the girls put together a solid first day round finishing in fifth place overall after shooting a team score of 395. Lincoln Lutheran was proving why they were the tournament favorites by shooting a very solid 347 score. Doniphan-Trumbull was a distant second firing a 378 followed by Cozad with a 385.
Paige Kristensen positioned herself as one of the top individual players carding a nine-hole scores of 44 and 45 to finish the first day in 11th place with an 89.
Sophie Pinkham played one of her finest state tournament rounds finishing with a 98. Taylor Kissinger got off to a rough start but righted the ship on her way to a 99. Sam Bendix rounded out the Minden team scoring by shooting a 109 while Sarah Richards also played and carded a 111 for the first day’s competition.
