Storm Pummels Wilcox With Baseball Size Hail

Severe thunderstorms rolled through south central Nebraska Monday Sept. 13 damaging crops, property and vehicles with large hail in some locations.
Hail the size of baseballs was reported at Wilcox in Kearney County as well as 1 mile west of Ragan in Harlan County.  These two hail reports were the largest hail reports received from south central Nebraska and north central Kansas, although there wre also several reports of quarter size hail, strong thunderstorm wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall from across the area, said a National Weather Service of Hastings report.
“We’ve had reports of windows knocked out in homes, cars dented, windshields broken out and lots of tree damage in town,” said Melinda Ferree, Wilcox Village Clerk. “But of course, we did have baseball size hail.”
Ferree reported the Wilcox Fall Festival, slated for Saturday, Sept. 18, will go on as planned.
Bob Swanson, Kearney County Supervisor, reported property and vehicle damage from tennis ball size hail  lasting approximately ten minutes at his farm northeast of Wilcox.
Golf ball to baseball size hail was also reported 5 miles southeast of Axtell, 3 miles southwest of Henderson, 6 miles south of Minden.
