In 2014, concerns that area children weren’t getting enough food during summer vacation led Minden Public Schools in cooperation with the Minden Rotary and the Kearney County Ministerial Alliance to begin the Summer Lunch Program. Now in its third year, the program continues to grow in popularity.
“This is my second year with the program and in that short time, the number of kids being fed has dramatically increased. Last year we fed over 100 kids,” volunteer coordinator Jeff Krull said.
The Nebraska Department of Food Service funds the program by reimbursing MPS for student meals served. The compensation allows enough to pay for nutritional meals and two food service employees. Rotary and the Ministerial Alliance help gather and organize volunteers from the community to prep, serve, and clean up the meals.
