Thompson, Sorensen Are FBLA Secretary and Parliamentarian

Minden Public Schools will be well represented on the 2011-12 Nebraska Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) state officer team.
Senior Shyanne Thompson will serve as the secretary and junior Trevor Sorensen will serve as the parliamentarian.
Thompson has known she wanted to become a state officer starting her sophomore year running for the secretary position two years in a row.
Thompson’s efforts were rewarded in Omaha in April of 2011 during the spring conference, winning the race for secretary.
“To be elected as secretary I had to run a campaign during the conference,” she said. “It is all about meeting new members and what we have in store for the membership for the next year. I ran for the position to further my business knowledge and represent our school, state and FBLA at a higher level.”
Before being selected by her peers, Thompson and Sorensen went through a screening phase with the state board of directors. They were tested about their basic knowledge of FBLA, and interviewed with the board. At the State Leadership Conference Thompson had to give a speech, run a campaign, and attend a formal caucus before being elected.
Thompson’s job requirements are to take minutes of the delegation and state officer team notes and attend state and national conventions and represent Nebraska.
Sorensen took a different path than Thompson to be on the Nebraska FBLA board. Sorensen went into the 2011 State Leadership Conference with his sights set on being the parliamentarian for the state. Sorensen took a test and scored the highest on the exam among all the other FBLA students who took the same test.
