Two Young Cancer Survivors Team Up At Relay For Life
When you meet Sara Fecht of Keene and Sadie Jons of Minden, it is hard to imagine that both women fought battles with the same form of cancer. Both are students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) and full of energy and enthusiasm for promising futures. What is hard for them to imagine is that their cancer stories are so similar.
“It’s eerie when you think about it,” Sadie said. Sara echoed her sentiment, “Our dads knew each other and it is amazing how similar everything was, even how we found out was similar.”
Sara and Sadie and have joined together with their families and friends to form the “Soldiers For Sadie and Sara” team for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. They will be walking in the Kearney County Relay For Life set to begin this Friday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the Outdoor Classroom in Minden. (see story on page 1)
Sara was diagnosed with Stage IIIB Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in the spring of 2011. “It was literally the fastest thing that has ever happened to me,” she said. While she wasn’t diagnosed until spring, signs that something was wrong were first noticed during her school physical at the Kearney County Clinic before the start of her junior year at Axtell High School. “The doctor thought my neck was kind of big but they thought it was thyroid or something small.”
