The Fredericksburg Cemetery Board of Directors has decided to build a memorial to honor the Veterans who are buried in the Fredericksburg Cemetery.
The monument will consist of two black granite stones engraved with the names of the 54 veterans buried at Fredericksburg Cemetery. There will be space on the stones for an additional 30 names. The refurbished bell from the 1911 church will be at the center of the monument which will be located in the east driveway of the cemetery where the tall Memorial Day flagpole stands.
Since 1986 when the 1911 church burned, the board has been looking for a way to use what was left of the bell. During the fire it fell from the top of the steeple and landed in the basement breaking the bell and its mounting brackets. While lying in the ashes, about half the bell melted. The board determined this monument is a fitting way to use the restored bell to both remember the 1911 church building and honor their veterans.
