Wayne Gene Fouts passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021 at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney, at the age of 77.  Wayne was born January 9, 1944, the second of four children born to Trenton and Alvena (Goedeken) Fouts.  Wayne attended country school at Ash Grove District #22, through the 8th grade then later graduated from Wilcox High School.  On February 27, 1965, Wayne married the love of his life, Rita Bendfeldt. They farmed all their lives raising cattle, corn, and wheat, on their farm south of Hildreth.  Wayne and Rita were blessed with three children.

Wayne was a very active man, he was always up at 5:00 in the morning and usually had his chores and some of his irrigating done before most people get up.  Wayne enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, he showed this by going to the kids’ events and by taking all the grandkids on special vacations. He also enjoyed having the grandkids ride with him in the tractor. Wayne made sure all the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids knew the ways of the farm and had a story for each thing he taught them.

June 17, 2021 was the day his life changed, as he fell from the top of a bailer. He spent eight weeks in the hospital recovering. But he surprised us all and recovered enough to come home and enjoy life. We were so glad to have him home. We couldn’t keep him in the house; the farm was in his blood and calling his name. He went out and drove the semi a couple more times. He loved this. When there was work to be done on the farm, he was there with helping hands.

Neighbors were important to Wayne, they would get together to help each other out all the time.  Wayne was a life-long member of the Pleasant View Church, until it closed in 2014, then he became a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wilcox.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rita Fouts of rural Hildreth; two daughters: Teresa (Gary) Paitz of Hildreth; and Tammy Bartling of Kearney; one son, Jeff (Jenny) Fouts of Hildreth; nine grandchildren:  Brianna (John) Kegley of Holdrege, and their children: Clydie, Natalie, and Audrie; Amber Paitz, and her son, Kelbi of Wilcox; Miranda (Will) Steinkruger of Macon, Nebraska, and their children, Warren and Nora; Karen (Ethen) Scott of Hildreth, and their children, Sawyer, and Owen; Shaylee Fouts of Lawton, Oklahoma; Dax Fouts of Hildreth and friend, Isabell Roberg; and Andrew, Sam, and Allie Bartling, all of Kearney; one brother, Larry Fouts and his wife, Alice of Naponee, Nebraska; two sisters: Carol Harms and her husband, Leroy of Franklin, Nebraska; and Lois Potter of Wilcox; one brother-in-law, Jerry Bendfeldt and his wife, Joan of Axtell; three sisters-in-law:  Alice Bendfeldt of Leawood, Kansas; Julie Paitz and her husband, Larry of Pleasanton, Nebraska; and Sue Bendfeldt of Kearney; along with many nieces and nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law:  Walter and Jessie Bendfeldt; two brothers-in-laws:  Glen Potter; and John Bendfeldt; and one nephew, Jason Bendfeldt.
