Whippets Dominate Stars At Home

Minden upended C-2 state-rated Kearney Catholic 32-14 at Kuper Field on September 9 moving the season record to 2-1. The Whippets will load the bus to Fairbury on September 16.

The first quarter was a trading of punts and ceding of possessions on downs so no scoring was produced.

Minden put together two second period scoring drives sandwiched around one by Kearney Catholic. The first was an eight-play drive that ended with Hank Kuehn’s 15-yard TD run. Rylan Holsten ran in the two-point conversion putting the Whippets up 8-0 at 8:08. It took just four plays for the Stars to answer which they did at 6:20 on an eight-yard run. The PAT kick was good, putting the score at 8-7. The Whippets then started a drive at their own 15 and marched down the field gaining five first downs along the way. On a second and nine from the 23, quarterback Carter Harsin found Brycen Schwenka in the end zone for a touchdown connection. Holsten again blasted in for the two-point conversion and at 1:01 Minden led 16-7. Finally, just before halftime, the Stars attempted a 50-yard FG that fell short.
