Whippets Down Patriots
The Minden Whippets boys basketball team ran their record to 6-0 on the season in the first round of the 2011 Minden Holiday Tournament at C.L. Jones Gymnasium.
The Whippets faced the Adams Central Patriots in the first round with Minden coming out on top of a 51-36 decision.
Christian Schwenka led the Dawgs with a team-high 17 points followed by Carson Blum with 15 points and Derek Kissinger 10.
With the win Minden moved to the title game on Dec. 30 to take on the Bennington Badgers at 6:15 p.m.
Schwenka started hot for the Whippets on the interior in the first period and the senior played his best game of the season.
Schwenka scored six points in the opening period followed by Kissinger with five as Minden lead the Patriots 13-8.
In the second period, Minden’s defense continued to dominate the Patriot offense holding them to only six points.
The Dawgs offense added ten points in the period as R.J. Watson and Blum each hit three-pointers while Thomas Sinsel and Mitch Muller added two points each.
Minden led Adams Central 23-14 at halftime.
Things heated up in the third period as the teams became more aggressive on the offensive end. Schwenka re-asserted himself on the block and came through with nine of the teams 13 points. Blum had the other two buckets.
