Minden hosted Sidney on September 13 and came away with a 21-16 win over the Red Raiders to move up to 2-1. The Whippets travel to Fillmore Central (Geneva) on September 20.
Minutes into the first quarter, Minden punted and Eddie Gonzalez recovered a Sidney fumble on the return at the Raiders 21. The Whippets took just three plays to score as Gonzalez went over from the ten. Irvin Hernandez added the PAT and Minden led 7-0 at 7:05. Sidney tied it a couple of minutes later on a three-yard run and the successful PAT kick. Then, on the final play of the period, Braden Bates hooked up with Ryan Johnson on a 27-yard passing TD. Hernandez’s boot put the Whippets up 14-7.
Midway through the second quarter, the Red Raiders drove 87 yards in 13 plays, culminated by a three-yard TD run. The conversion failed so Minden still held the lead 14-13. On Minden’s ensuing possession, a long kickoff return and a 19-yard run, both by Gonzalez, put the Whippets near Sidney’s red zone. At 2:46 Bates found Creed Ehlers in the north end zone to complete a 24-yard scoring play. Another Hernandez point-after kick gave Minden a 21-13 advantage. The Red Raiders were driving late in the period but Sawyer Koch forced a fumble and Gage Lupkes recovered to close out the half.
