Whippets Fall To Crusaders 54-19
A back-and-forth first half became one-sided in the second half as Grand Island Central Catholic rolled to a 54-19 win over Minden in the season opener for both teams played at Kuper Field on September 6.
The Whippets struck first less than three minutes into the opening quarter when quarterback Jonas Lovin connected with Jacob Choquette on a 53-yard scoring pass. Alexis Ciprian booted the conversion to give Minden a 7-0 lead.
The Dawg defense forced punts on the Crusaders’ first two possessions, but on Minden’s second possession GICC picked off a Lovin pass to get the ball back for the visitors. The Whippets defense was again playing stingy putting GICC in a third and ten. What ensued was a harbinger of things to come as the Crusaders hit consecutive pass plays of 33 and 25 yards, the latter resulting in a touchdown. With the PAT, the score was tied at 7-7.
