Kearney Catholic’s scoring outburst in the second period was enough for the Stars to outlast Minden 31-22 at Kearney on September 27. The Whippets dipped to 3-2 and host Cozad on October 4 in the Homecoming game.
The game was scoreless after the first period. But with about eight minutes to go in the second, Catholic scored on a four-yard run and added the conversion kick to go up 7-0. Minden replied a couple minutes later with a 27-yard scoring toss from Braden Bates to Ryan Johnson. The conversion failed leaving the Whippets down one, 6-7. Then in the waning minutes of the period the Stars struck for two touchdowns-—- a 43-yard pass play followed by a 33-yard pass play. Both conversion kicks were good and at halftime Catholic led 21-6.
Minden closed the gap just a few plays and a few minutes into the third period when Eddie Gonzalez broke free for a 41-yard TD run. Gonzalez ran for the two-point conversion bringing the Whippets to within one score, 14-21. Catholic then extended its lead to ten, 24-14, with a 19-yard field goal with around two minutes left in the third. That was all the scoring in the quarter.
