Whippets Fall To Stars In C1-9 Subdistrict Final
The Minden Whippet volleyball team had its 2010 season come to an end on Nov. 2, falling short on a wildcard bid to the state volleyball tournament.
The Whippets were defeated in four sets by scores of 23-25, 17-25, 25-20 and 19-25 on by the Kearney Catholic Stars ending Minden’s season with a record of 25 wins and only 5 losses.
The top-seeded Stars and second-seeded Whippets met in the Class C1-9 subdistrict final held in Grand Island at Grand Island Northwest High School.
Kearney Catholic (25-3) advances to the C1-5 district final and will take on O’Neill (16-9) with a spot in the state field up for grabs in St. Paul on Nov. 5.
The Stars got off to a fast start in the opening set, bolting to a 7-2 lead.
Minden rallied from behind midway through the first set behind a kill from Cassandra Choquette and two service points by Carly Sitorius including an ace to tie the game at 14-14.
The Stars reeled off seven of the next nine points to take a five point lead, 21-16. Kearney Catholic got to set point before Minden staged one final rally. Hallie Bauer and Bailie Muller had back to back kills followed by Choquette and Bauer again getting kills to pull to within one, 24-23, but a service error by Minden gave the first set to the Stars 23-25.
Minden and Kearney Catholic played a back and forth second set until the Stars pulled ahead for good 11-6. The Whippets could never get closer than three points, 13-10. Lauren Taylor had Minden back to within three later in the set with two service winners at 18-15 but the Stars rolled off seven of the next nine points to take the set 17-25.
