The Minden Whippets boys basketball team was one win away from achieving its goal of becoming the 2011 Class C-1 state champions following its semifinal victory at the Devaney Center on Friday afternoon.
Standing in the fifth-seeded Whippets (22-2) way was an old nemesis, the top-seeded Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders (25-1). GICC had defeated Minden back in December (57-41) and Dawgs were looking for payback.
It took overtime but Minden can cross beating the Crusaders off its to do list earning a nail-biting 70-66 win.
“I feel great for these young men,” stated Minden head coach Shannon Lovin. “I’m so happy for them, they’ve had this goal all year long and they’ve been working and it’s been a long time.”
“We have one more to go,” added Lovin. “We are not done yet.
Minden (23-2) faced the third-seeded Norfolk Catholic Knights (25-2) in the C-1 final on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Norfolk Catholic reached the finals by defeating the Milford Eagles 55-51 in the other semifinal contest.
