Whippets Upset Stars
The Minden football program picked up a big win at Kuper Field on September 21 with a 16-14 defeat of state-rated Kearney Catholic. The Whippets climb to 3-2 and next play at Cozad on Friday.
The first quarter was mostly a stalemate as each team punted three times and the Stars had a missed field goal. Then Minden struck quickly, needing just two plays to go 62 yards. Elijah Lovin connected with Jay Maska for a 43-yard gain and on the next play, Lovin hooked up with Jaron Brown for a 19-yard scoring pass. Irvin Hernandez’ extra point kick put Minden up 7-0 with 12 seconds left in the opening period.
The Whippets needed just two snaps to fire up the homecoming crowd again on their initial possession of the second quarter. With Minden facing a second and six from the 20, Lovin weaved his way to the sideline and turned on the jets to complete an 80-yard TD run. Hernandez reliably added the PAT and at 10:10 the Whippets were ahead 14-0.
