Whitney Earns Legion Scholarship

Alex Whitney, son of Pat and Mike Whitney, Minden, received a $3,000 scholarship for advancing to the semi-final round of the National American Legion Oratorical contest held in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 14.
Whitney began speaking competitively at seven years old, after seeing his older sister compete in 4-H.
“If my sister can do it,” Whitney remembered thinking, “I can do it too.”
During his seventh grade year, Whitney became aware of the Legion’s junior contest, which entailed the preparation and presentation of an eight-minute speech.
As it turned out, he was the only one in his age group to enter the local contest.
