Wildcats Advance In D-1 Playoffs With Victory Over Eagles
The Axtell Wildcats football team lived to fight another week in the 2010 Class D-1 state playoffs after Thursday’s home victory.
The seventh-seeded Wildcats hosted the tenth-seeded Garden County Eagles in the opening round of the D-1 playoffs. Axtell was able to pull away in the fourth period en route to a 44-38 win.
Axtell (6-3) will advance to the second round to take on west division second-seeded Overton Eagles (9-0) after Overton defeated North Central in its opening round game. Axtell will travel to Overton in a re-match of a week two contest in which the Eagles were victorious. Kick off is set for Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m.
The Axtell/Overton winner will advance to the quarterfinals and will face the victor between sixth-seeded Kenesaw BlueDevils and third-seeded South Loup on Tuesday, Nov. 9.
The Wildcats got off to a great start with Bryce Runge filling in at quarterback for an injured Brandon Benson. Runge handed off to senior tailback Heath Anderbery on the third play who rumbled 39-yards to pay dirt. Anderbery added the two-point conversion to put the Cats up 8-0 over the visiting Eagles.
