Wildcats and Falcons Face Off

Axtell’s boys topped Wilcox-Hildreth 66-36 in Wilcox on January 20 in a contest that was close and competitive for the first half and a few minutes into the third quarter. The Cats got back to .500 at 7-7 and the Falcons dropped to 0-14.

Axtell led the entire first quarter and appeared to be pulling away when up 14-5 at 3:24. But Wil-Hil scored on four consecutive possessions, punctuated by a trey from Sam Gruwell, and the Cats led by just one, 15-14, when the quarter ended. Cooper Miller had six first period points for Axtell and Gruwell had five for Wil-Hil.

A big crowd, energized by a cancer awareness emphasis (lots of orange shirts worn by students, coaches and fans from both schools), a Dazzlers’ performance and the close proximity of the two competing programs, got very loud on the Falcons’ side when Grayson Sheen drained a trey 30 seconds into the second period to put Wil-Hil up 17-15. Axtell went on a 9-2 run ending with a Keyton Cole three-ball at 3:20 to lead 24-19. Micah Johnson responded with a three for Wil-Hil to close the gap to two, then the Cats ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead at halftime 31-22. Carson Lindau scored seven for Axtell and Johnson five for the Falcons in the second.
