Wildcats, Falcons Opened 2011 Track Season On Friday

The Axtell Wildcats and Wilcox-Hildreth girls and boys track and field teams opened the 2011 spring sports season on Friday by competing in the Dick O’Neill Invitational held at Kearney High School.
The Axtell boys came away with a fifth place finish, scoring 51 points. Brandon Benson provided three gold medals for the Cats after making a strong comeback from an injury he suffered in basketball.
Benson won the 100-meters in a time of 11.2, pole vault going 13’0″; and 200-meters in 23.6.
Heath Anderbery added to the Wildcats score by placing third in the pole vault (12’0″) and fifth in the 400-meters in 55.1. Shafer Fox also added points with a fifth place finish in the 800-meters in a time of 2:16.9.
The Falcons from Wilcox-Hildreth had a limited number of competitors but placed ninth with 16 points.
Michael Nelson led the Falcon boys by placing in three events. Nelson was second in the long jump with a career-best of 19’10” followed by a third place medal in the high jump, clearing 5’10”. Nelson completed his day by placing fourth in the 100-meters in a time of 11.7.
