Champions again! The Axtell boys earned their second consecutive Class D state track and field title at Omaha Burke Stadium on May 17 and 18 and finished off another perfect season just as they did last year by winning all of their meets. The Cats scored 66 points and were well ahead of the rest of the ‘D’ field which included as the next three North Central (cooperative of Rock County/Keya Paha County) with 47, Hartington-Newcastle with 34 and Shelton with 32. Wilcox-Hildreth scored 7.5 points , good for 34th.
Axtell’s usual Big Three accounted for 61 points. Junior Lincoln Trent won golds in both the 1600 and 3200, fending off Cheney of Shelton by a fraction of a second in both. His time in the 1600 was just a half a second off Scott Schneider’s school record set in 1997. Senior Creighton Kring repeated as the class gold winner in the triple jump, extending his school record by 3/4 of an inch, and he also finished second in the 200, third in the long jump and sixth in the 100. Senior Lane Bertrand was second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles.
Other Cat medalists were Tyler Danburg (seventh in the 400) and the 4 x 800 relay of freshman Calvin Johnson, senior Tom Peterson, junior Jake Wehrer and junior Zach Hinrichs (sixth).
