Wolves upend Wildcats in Semifinals
Axtell’s boys were upended in the semifinal of the D1-9 subdistrict by Loomis as the Wolves moved on with a 70-65 win in Bertrand on February 21. The Cats ended the season at 10-11.
There was plenty of offense in this game which can be attributed in part to both teams cashing nine three-pointers and Loomis converting a remarkable 25 of 26 free throws.
In the first quarter alone Loomis made five treys and Axtell four as the Wolves led 21-16. Jake Halvorsen’s two threes and six points led the Cats in the period.
Loomis took a 39-31 lead into halftime. Axtell could not slow down the Wolves’ Wes Trompke. He had 20 points at halftime, 37 for the game and was 15 of 16 at the free throw line. In the second quarter for the Cats Keyton Cole scored five and Tyler Stoddard and Elijah Bergstrom put up four each.
Axtell tried to keep pace in the third period, cutting the margin to six, 51-45.
